The Plaza

The Plaza is a mockumentary-style comedy TV show, documenting the diverse and erratic lives of four different store owners and their employees. Somewhere amidst the sunny suburbs of California, all their dreams, laughs, and drama come together.

For this project, executive producers requested an original concept, containing an Indian lead and set in the US.

Shayan served as the Director, Co-Producer, and Creative Lead for the first season, inspired by his experience working as a pizza delivery boy in a Middle Eastern-owned pizzeria in a So-Cal strip mall. The show combines elements of "The Office" with a unique twist, dubbing it "The Office of Immigrants."

Shayan co-wrote 10 episodes, developing an ensemble cast led by Mr. Singh and his son Reddy, whose evolving relationship is central to the series. To capture authentic dynamics, the actors were kept apart initially, allowing their bond to naturally develop over the season.

The show was filmed in San Dimas, CA, after extensive location scouting. While they secured three out of four key locations, they had to rewrite the script when negotiations for the fourth location fell through, replacing a Chinese donut shop with a tabletop roleplaying store. This adaptability contributed to the show's unique quality.

Characters, particularly Mr. Singh and Reddy, often broke the fourth wall, creating intimate moments with the audience and enhancing the show's connection with viewers.

  • Shayan and his team was able to reduce production costs by 31% and production time by 36% without diluting the show's vision. This was achieved by reworking the shooting schedule, prioritizing location and time of day, and strategically pairing scene and cast members. These adjustments were the key driving factors in maintaining the show's quality while optimizing efficiency.
